Japan has donated $360,000 to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to support the provision of safe shelter, water, sanitation, and hygiene for recently arrived Congolese refugees in Kigoma Region. The donation aims to address the urgent needs of over 14,000 asylum seekers from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who have sought refuge in Tanzania since early last year.
The UNHCR is facing a funding challenge of $8 million to respond to the DRC emergency and is appealing to global agencies and private donors for additional support. The Japanese government has been extending humanitarian assistance for refugee operations in Tanzania, providing emergency grants and supporting refugees from various countries.
Mahoua Parums, the UNHCR country representative, expressed gratitude for Japan’s timely contribution, which will enable the agency to provide essential items for the new arrivals and ensure their physical protection and dignity. Tanzania has a long history of providing safe harbor for refugees and continues to support the needs of those fleeing conflict in neighboring countries.
UNHCR and the government are working with partners to provide emergency shelter, supplies, and essential services to the refugees. Access to shelter, water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities is crucial for reducing mortality and morbidity, enhancing refugees’ protection, dignity, and quality of life
