Belgium lends support to Tanzania for clean energy effort

During a continental conference in Windhoek, Namibia, Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Dr. Doto Biteko agreed with Belgian Energy Minister Tinne van der Straeten to explore the use of hydrogen in electricity generation. This aligns with Tanzania’s broader efforts to transition from fossil fuels and adopt cleaner energy sources, including natural gas.

The conference, focused on energy alternatives for Africa, provided a platform to discuss the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy solution. While Tanzania and other African countries possess natural gas deposits, hydrogen’s widespread availability requires significant investments in extraction and processing technologies. The deputy prime minister emphasized Tanzania’s commitment to sustainable development and reducing the health risks associated with traditional energy sources. He highlighted the longstanding cooperation with Belgium in various sectors, including energy, and expressed gratitude for their support in promoting clean cooking energy. The Belgian minister affirmed her country’s readiness to assist in this transition and emphasized the positive impact of clean energy on economic development and environmental conservation. The conference offered Tanzania an opportunity to learn about the continental potential of hydrogen for electricity generation and contribute to ongoing discussions on this emerging energy source.
